Guy Roles here from Worcestershire UK with my radio show Guy’s Jumpin’ Boogie.
So I guess it all started when I was a child, listening to my father’s Lonnie Donegan & Shadows records and my mother’s Frankie Vaughan, Johnnie Ray and Frankie Lymon 78’s on a 1950’s record player. From then on my record collection grew and I lost count of how many diamond needles/styli I wore out.
My record collection started with rock ‘n’ roll classics by Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly etc. I was completely sucked in by the George Lucas movie American Graffiti so I started digging deeper and discovered doo-wop, R&B, western swing, jump blues, country and more. In the meantime came the classic cars including a 57 Chevy Belair which I still have after 28 years.
After listening to my shows you’ll see that I have a bit of an obsession with 78 rpm records especially 40’s & 50’s jump blues and rhythm & blues. The question I get asked the most is “are you really playing 78’s or have they been transferred onto a hard drive?” Answer… yes I’m really playing original 78’s on a vintage 50’s turntable and not playing them off a hard drive.
I have been a mobile DJ since 1977 and a radio DJ since 2015. great to be able to bring my show Guy’s Jumpin’ Boogie to Rockabilly Radio.
